Would you like to giving an impressive Speech? Here are 11 Tips for Public Speaking
An article on giving a speech and on public speaking by Swati Sachdeva
1. Write your own introduction. Probably someone else is going to introduce you. Others may give an introduction which you may not like hence
write the words yourself, making it brief, pertinent, and emphasizing your achievements.

2. Know your audience very well. Make sure you know exactly who is going to be in the audience, why they are there,
and why they invited you to make a talk.
3. Check the setting of the stage, mike etc. Go to the facility early to make sure you’re comfortable in the surroundings.
Check the microphone, lighting, audio/visual equipment, and any other factors that may affect your performance. Meet the audience members as they arrive, this is a great way to build rapport and a captive audience.

4. Start with a bang. The first thirty seconds have the most impact. Don’t waste these precious seconds with “Ladies and Gentlemen” or
a weather report. Come out punching with a startling statement, quote, or story.

5. Use humor with caution. Don’t start with a joke unless you are absolutely brilliant at it. If you bomb, you’re going to lose any
credibility you have. And if your only humorous material is at the beginning, the audience will be disappointed when you become serious.

6. Be precise. Do not put in too many words while explaining one thing. Be specific and to the point.Limit your topics. If you’re giving a half-hour speech, don’t expect to tell the audience everything you know. Pick two or three important
 points.

7. Speech should be properly organised. General and specific purpose of the speech must be clearly defined. It’s preferable to use NUMBERED POINTS like “I have 6 points to say in this regard, point 1 is..point 2 is…and so on and so forth”

8. Use visual aids in the form of powerpoint presentations or handouts. Its better to distribute handouts in case your presentation has statiscal data. Its better for the audience to refer to the handouts for any specific information. also it leaves a long lasting impact.

9. Never do Paper Reading. Have eye cotact and use body language. This will make you feel more confident.

10. Practice with a tape recorder or in front of friends. If you forget everything else, that’s OK but never forget practicing your speech.

11. End with a strong closing. Write a humorous or memorable closing statement or vivid example. Then memorize it so, no matter what distractions
may occur, you can always “bring it home.” Towards the end of your speech, deliver your closing line directly to the audience, then accept their
applause.

GOAL SETTING: The Building Blocks of Success

Goals: The Building Blocks of Success

                                                                                                               By: Anurag Aggarwal

A man once wrote to Abraham Lincoln, saying that he wanted to be a lawyer. Mr. Lincoln replied to him: “ If you are resolutely determined to make a lawyer of yourself, then your work is more than 90% done.” This response is understandable, coming from a man who, as a boy, used to walk 50 miles from his log cabin to borrow a book, & back again to return it: a journey of 8 days.

Lincoln was a great man, but such greatness can belong to ordinary people in their everyday lives, as well.

What makes a man so resolute? Not his desires or wants alone. It’s his ability to set goals for himself & to achieve them.

Goals are born out of dreams. There’s a story about two men who went to Disneyland; one man remarked, “ If Walt Disney were alive to see this place, he would be proud of it!” To which the second replied, “ He did see this place years ago…it was his vision, which is now a reality.”

Dreams that become goals are not idle daydreams; they are visions that compel action, which motivate people to achieve. Without a vision, you will not know where you are heading, or where you want to go.

The first step to achieving anything is to set one’s goals. Goals are what you want, & they determine what you will get.

Where you see yourself 10 years from now is your vision; when you decide to work towards making it come true, it becomes your goal. And achieving it is your success.

Of course, again, it is not enough to just set your goals; it is necessary to focus all your resources in the right direction to reach them.

For this, one must decide on the path to take, which will lead to the goal. This may sound easy, but in reality, it is a major challenge, as sometimes many paths seem to lead to the same direction, or worse still, there may be no paths at all in sight.  For instance, you can get to CP from GK-I by bus, or autorickshaw, or a taxi. The choice of vehicle will depend entirely on you.

But suppose you want to go to California from GK-I, then can you consider a bus or a taxi? No, you can’t, but does that mean you give up your plan of going to California? This is where your determination will count: if you really want to make it, come what may, then you will take a flight to your destination.

If the distance between you and your goal is too large, then only your will & motivation can get you there. Most people try to decrease the distance by lowering their standard, compromising on their goal, i.e. giving up. But the successful man will bridge this distance by striving to get closer to his ultimate aim.

This is exactly what the famous publisher, Shekhar Malhotra did: when wholesalers & booksellers were refusing to stock the books he published, because their demand was low & profits were negligible, he had the wisdom not to give up. He started circulating newsletters about the books, which aroused the readers’ interest in them, & soon the sales of the books shot up manifold.

Noted writer Shiv Khera maintains that “winners don’t do different things, they do things differently”. But Malhotra devised a way, which was not only different, but he also did it differently: he went beyond just “winning”; he was successful, because he innovated.

To succeed, it is important to change one’s attitude to match the circumstances, like the rats in “Who Moved My Cheese?” Most people resist change; they would rather alter the “end” than change the “means”.

But, one may ask, what if one’s goal is too far away, & the only way of reaching them is beyond your grasp?

A giant leap is not the only way to bridge a gap; inching closer bit by bit will also work, as long as you meet your target.

So, if you can’t afford that flight to California, you can work as a cabin boy on a ship that’s headed for the USA, get off at the port, & then hitch-hike all the way to your dream: it might take longer, but you’ll certainly get there!

The old proverb “Many a little makes a mickle” is best applied to goal setting.

Achieving your goal is a lot like eating a full, roasted elephant: you have to cut it up into smaller parts!

Dividing your ultimate goal into smaller “sub-goals” will make it easier to reach, just like it’s easier to solve those enormous algebraic equations when you work them out in parts.

A good way to work towards one’s goal is to set some deadlines for oneself: if you need to meet a sales target, for example, then you could set smaller weekly targets to be met, rather than aiming at the annual figure at one go. Students preparing for examinations are able to complete a vast syllabus only if they aim to finish a few chapters per week, a few topics per day, so that they are not burdened by the size of the whole mass of work.

Because the sub-goal is smaller & more realistic, it is easier to motivate oneself to work for it.

But even such effective strategies will not work if one lacks the two crucial elements of success: determination & perseverance. A battle cannot be won with clever stratagem alone; the armoury is just as vital!

And no weapon is as strong as grit & hard work. Like Abe Lincoln believed, if there’s a fire in your belly, then your battle is as good as won.

When I was 9 years old, I wanted a bike; when my father refused to buy me one, I decided to buy one for myself, & started to save up my daily allowance of 25 paise, denying myself the little treats that a child usually craves for. It took me almost two years of saving up those coins, but in the end, I bought myself my dream bike. My self-control & steadfast will finally brought me my reward. And my present success, too, is a result of my belief, that if one perseveres long & hard enough, he can attain any goal, no matter how long it takes, or how difficult it may seem.

Never underestimate the power of will; it can overcome even death.

“Chicken Soup for the Surviving Soul” relates the inspiring true story of a man who defied fate with the power of love. He had met his wife at the age of 9, & ever since, had loved her more than anything else in the world; so, when he was diagnosed with blood cancer at the age of 64, with barely 6 months to live, he resolved that he would not die while his wife still lived. And he lived to be 81, & died the day after his wife passed away, after cheating death for 17 years.

This immense power can fuel a man to accomplish anything, if he will only believe in himself.

We cannot be motivated by other people; we can only be inspired by others to motivate ourselves, to awaken our will, & strengthen our resolve.

When we give up on something, we actually give up on ourselves, because we deny ourselves a chance to fulfil the remarkable potential we all have to attain the so-called unattainable.

Indeed, history books abound with accounts of legendary men & women who have achieved more in one year than many of us do in a lifetime; they all have one trait in common: THEY NEVER GAVE UP.

And we can all learn from them, & use their wisdom in our lives as well.

Inspiration does not come from the use of many words, which Sir Winston Churchill proved, when he was invited to give an inspiring speech to the students of the University of Oxford. He put aside his trademark hat, cane, & cigar, approached the podium, & said, before returning to his seat: “ Never give up, never give up”.

STAR TECHNIQUE – A TECHNIQUE FOR SELF MOTIVATION

Posted on 8th December 2009 by anurag in AAIPS Articles

Star Technique..
We learned this technique from Anurag Aggarwal during our public speaking session. Anurag being wonderful speaker and coach, started with “We have a tendency to start any thing in life with a great zeal. As the time passes by we get bored and never complete the cycle. We never reach to desired end state”. We all dream for a wonderful future and take the first step in the direction of full filling the dream.
All of us joined Anurag Aggarwal institute to become a good public speaker. This is first step in direction of becoming good public speaker.
Many of us must have visualized the benefits we will be getting after the completion of course.
Yes or No ????
Yes …all of us!!!
Session one great enthusiasm. Session two good enthusiasm. Session three Ok. Session four phssssss…… Session five phssssss…….and after some time “kar lenge”. After the completion of course we will be benefited to some extent but will not be in a position to fulfill our desires.
Why this happens that we are not that successful as we think we should be? Although we are keen, have a will and taken the first step too…
We have lot of goals in our lives. We cannot achieve these goals due to many “REASONS”. Life becomes frustrating.
Cannot we have some solution to achieve these goals in any circumstance?
I will take a few more examples.
Human body, the great creation of God, is a wonderful machine. We all need to take care of that machinery. As all machines require Fuel, servicing and daily maintenance. This body also requires the same. We all wish that we should not have any disease. But almost all of us suffer from either BP, Heart disease, Diabetes, and if not these big ones.. We suffer from Flu, body ache, and many more diseases.

Please let me know a single human being who want to have these diseases and do not want to live a healthy life..But the results are opposite of our desires.

Remember golden days of courtship period / romance days(For married people only) . Time was no limit. Can spend 24 hours talking to your beloved. After marriage speaking on phone for more than three minutes becomes a challenge. All routine talks .. Kaya kiya? Kanha ho? Dinner me kaya khaoge?Aj phone kyou nahi kiya? Usne mujhe aj aisa bola. Boring .. isn’t it? This is how men feel.. Do not have any experience how women feel, but should be similar..

Wonderful example about employment given by Anurag. On the day when you receive appointment letter, you thank God. Call all friends / relatives and share the good news. As time passes you get bored.. Same old habit. Not happy with profile, package, boss unnecessary troubles you. Think undeserving colleagues get promotion and you start thinking of leaving the job again.

Our dreams in terms of Health, Wealth, Career, Good Family Life, Bright future for our children, and many more are not fulfilled due to “REASONS”. We blame our parents, wife, boss, children, colleagues, and all other persons in this universe for our failures.

Holy book “GEETA” Says. Jiasa karam karega waisa fal dega bhagwan .. Ye hai GEETA ka gayan.

It is not somebody else, who is responsible, for our good or bad condition, and we ourselves are responsible for this.

Yes or No ?

If yes, do we have any solution for taking controls on our lives?

Yes we do have. The great STAR technique. It is wonderful tool. I have experienced this and got great benefits.

The technique teaches you how to achieve what you desire. We get a star after completion of one task. These tasks are small and one should be to complete this within five to seven minutes. These small tasks are the small steps of achieving a big goal of life.

Rest all of you have been trained by Anurag .

Coming to the point how I am enjoying the benefits.

Health : Desires… Want to get up early. Drink four glasses of warm water for removal of toxins and want to do exercise for half an hour. Help children to get ready for school. Start for office at 7.35 am

Life before star technique. Sleep late. Get up at 6.15 am . Drink one glass of water . No exercise. Help kids to get ready for school. Get ready till 7.50 am , leave for office without breakfast. Reach late

Life after star technique.. Get up at 5.30 am. Two stars ( Difficult task). Drink four glasses of warm water .. Two stars for two glasses. Exercise.. I do skipping. Get one star for two minutes and five for ten minutes of skipping. Skip around 1350 times in ten minutes.

Now I am able to start for my office at 7.35 am. Drive on empty road . Reach office in time, without getting tense in traffic and without worrying about getting late and have lot of energy for the whole day. I am sure daily exercise will keep me healthy.

I earn nine stars in the morning.

Office life ..

Desires : Want to be productive, work as a good team member, get the job done from my colleagues, keep the team members motivated and keep the boss happy without ticking the box.

Life before star technique: Delay in replying to the mails, Spending time in gossips, Not talking to the boss regarding issues, and spending more than the allocated time in the meetings.

Life after star technique.. Immediate start replying mails .. Get One Star. Finishing the reply in five minutes Get One star. Talking to boss about non routine but important point one star. Finishing the meeting in five minutes one star and one star every five minutes for longer but productive meetings. If non productive no stars. Taking regular shop floor rounds. Every productive round per five minute one star .. Non Productive rounds no star. This helps me in controlling the thought process and concentrating ,with my team, only on improvements.

Gossips, as advised by Anurag, If I get rid of colleagues habitual of wasting time in three minutes, get one star.

Friends productivity has increased, get greater job satisfaction. Leave office early and spend time with family.

Family Life..

Desires: Peace and harmony with my beloved wife. Good atmosphere for kids, Help wife for house hold jobs.

Life before star technique: Arguments on small issues, no contribution for house hold, kept on watching TV,

Life after star technique: Keep listening to wife’s issues with patience. No argument for three minutes gets one star. Say yes and start doing work assigned by wife gets one star. Help in cleaning the room every five minutes get one star. Help children in study but without star.

Life is peaceful as control on not arguments for the sake of argument has reduced.

Public Speaking..

I get one star if I finish reading one session of word power made easy. Prepare for speech every five minute speech one star. Wrting, Today I spend 75 minutes writing this blog . I given my self 10 stars and still on.

I am sure I will achieve the desired Goal for which I have joined Anurag’s institute and Star technique will be of great help.

There is long list of my experiences. I will keep writing and sharing. I think this is enough for today.

Friends this is wonderful tool to control and improve yourself. I have started sharing this technique with my friends. Please do write your experiences also. Sharing will improve our English language and will learn from each other’s experiences.

Best of luck and thank you Anurag for providing a magical tool to control our thought process..

Best Regards,

Navneet

‘FANTASY OF GRAND GANGA TOUR’

Posted on 5th November 2009 by anurag in AAIPS Articles

AAIPS had undertaken an excursion tour of the grand ganga for the AAIPS students, members and guests. It was a two days tour starting from onset of night of 1st of oct.2009 and we returned on the mid night of the 3rd of oct.2009.

The tour was full of fantasy, amusements, entertainments, songs, and other presentations by almost all the participants. On the evening/night of 1st oct. 2009, we assembled at Kamala Nagar AAIPS office and started our journey. All the participants joined the tour and we reached the Delhi –U.P. border around mid night. After completing the travel formalities we proceeded towards our destination.

Every body was vide awaken and in a cheerful mood as he was waiting for the time to bring out the heart for making the time more and more entertaining and pleasure some. There were Antakshari, singing of songs, quiz/puzzles, jokes, dance, acting and what not.

The entire programmes were of course guided /anchored by Anurag Aggarwal.

First of all there was antakshari competition between the occupants of the right hand seats and the occupants of the left hand seats in the bus. Later on there was the dance and music session which continued for late hours. The bus had the small tea halt in between the on words journey.

We reached our camp site at around 9.00 A.M. the camp name is “Wonder lost camp“, in grand ganga area which is around 25 K.M. from Rishikesh on highway to Badrinath. The camp site is on the edge of river ganga and we had to walk down about 1 K.M. the hill and rocky terrain, rough footsteps from the high location where the bus had the halt.

The camp site was very amazing. We were on the right side edge of the river ganga. There was sandy ground in a width of about 50 Meters. Small size elegant tents were erected having the capacity of 2 or 3 persons in each tent. All of us got refreshed there and took the breakfast.

Around 11.00 A.M. on 2-10 09, the entire team proceeded for Rafting in river ganga. The starting point was about 6 K.M. upstream of the camp site. All of us were accommodated in three Rafting boats. We sailed down and reached the camp site around 1.30 Noon. We had lunch at the camp site and after one hour we again proceeded for the downwards journey. It was a very fantastic journey, full of joy and adventure. We nine persons were rowing in one boat. We were required to follow the instructions of the guide.

There were over 10 raffles in the river course and crossing the raffle was really an adventurous, courageous, and dangerous game although every body was wearing the safety life jackets. The boats used to tilt up & down. Water waves used to enter in the boat (raft), and I was throwing out the filled water in the boat/raft. It was very adventurous scene and every body in the boat used to cry/scream when the boat used to encounter the high tide and fast flowing water in the river. While sailing down we reached a very interesting location and got down from the raft on the right bank of the river. It was the bathing site with shallow water and there is a warm water spring coming down from the hill side. There is also a hill of about 15Ft. height and the people used to jump from the height right in to the deep water of the river. It was really a fun time. Every body wanted to have a dip in river and enjoy. There was all amusement and pleasure everywhere. After an hour or so we all again boarded our boats and proceeded further downwards towards Rishikesh. There were several raffles again in the boat journey. Passing through raffles and rough water is really adventurous and exciting. The screaming and cries of the occupants of the boats shall always hound in the memories and provide pleasure.

Around 5.30 P.M. we reached the location on the river side near to the location of parking of our bus. We all traveled towards the Rishikesh city on the right hand side of Laxman Jhoola. Around 6.00 P.M. most of the persons went around in Rishikesh to see the temples and other holy sites and returned in the bus at 7.30 P.M.

Then we proceeded towards our camp site “Wonder Lost” which was about 25 K.M. from Rishikesh. Around 9.00 P.M. we reached in our camp. The location of the camp was around 1 K.M. down the hill with steep slope. It was a bit difficult to walk down & up the hill. After reaching the camp we had our full dinner.

After dinner it was again amusement and romantic atmosphere. The camp boys arranged for Bone-fire and placed cane chairs around. Every body assembled around the bone-fire. It was a pleasant weather and cool breeze was blowing. It was the dance on music session. Every body had the chance to perform. There was quiz competition, exploring competition, acting, play, musical chair game and lot more. The entire amusement went up to late mid night, till every body got exhausted.

Next day i.e. On 3-10-09 in the morning at 7 A.M. we woke up amid the river side musical sound of the early morning. The chorus by birds on the trees, cool breeze and flowing water of Ganges were making the atmosphere pleasant like any thing. After getting fresh and taking bath in the river, we got prepared for taking the breakfast. We all had the breakfast by 9.30 A.M. It was a good prepared breakfast.

Now in the eternity of items/activities, we had the items of rock climbing & rappelling along with songs, music, jokes and other amusements. We had to leave the camp site by 2.00 O’clock in the afternoon after the lunch. Many persons packed their luggage and climbed up to board the bus parked on the highway.

We reached the rock climbing site which was about 3 K.M. away. It was about 15 Ft. high rock, almost flat vertical in the front side. There were two ways to climb up the rock. One way was to climb from the vertical face of the rock by placing the feet in the cracks and fissures of the rock, and also placing the hands in the upper sides of the rock. Here the push is provided by one of the legs and further hold by the hands. It is a bit tedious and tiring method, but it has its own charm and pleasure. Who so ever has accomplished this task has the enhanced confidence and pleasure of success. The other way of climbing the rock was to walk down from the back side of the rock. On the top of the rock there was one game master who used to rap the rope on the body of the climbers to perform the activity of rapping, appropriately. Other safety precautions were also taken and all participants rappelled down the hill with feet on the rock face.

We spent several hours in the games. Others were busy in reciting poems, jokes, stories and their experiences. A few were busy in taking photo snaps of each other, group and general photos. The atmosphere was totally charged with humor. At around 1.00 P.M. we all proceeded towards our “Wonder Lost” camp site. The persons who did not have brought their luggage in the morning went down to bring their luggage. They also took their lunch down there. Rest of the persons remained in the bus parked on the highway and a request was sent to the persons who went down and the camp manager to send up the lunch in some packets for those persons who did not got down. The request of bring up the packed food was how ever not accepted by the camp manager due to some reasons.

Any how our bus proceeded for the back journey for Delhi & home. Bus halted for the lunch at a suitable restaurant in Haridwar. We all had the full lunch and now we were fully ready to proceed towards our back journey.

By this time the atmosphere was fully charged with enthusiasm. Every body was in a very high mood. Passing through Haridwar provided the religious fervor. The team leader sensed the mood and started an antakshari competition bhajans, geet, religious songs and other similar activities by making two groups in the bus. There were two rows of seats in the bus and the persons in each row formed the group. There was “left side group” and the “right side group”. The competition started by each group by Arties, and further the religious songs, geet, bhajans, shabad, guruvani, bhenta, ardas etc. were recited by each group. Proper marks were awarded to each group for their performances. Every person in group was associated in the songs, bhajans etc. and this also counted towards the marks awarded. More and more enthusiasm was there. In the puja and bhajans the participants mixed dramatics actions along with dances and different worship posses. The competition credibly became tougher & tougher and went for about one & half hour. The bus was completely engulfed in the fervor of religious songs and other activities. The passer biers on the highway were also attracted towards the songs, chorus etc. going on in the bus. Finally the competition ended in a tie. Every body was full of enthusiasm and high spirit. The leader praised very much the religious antakshari and termed it as the best performance.

It was going to be the midnight and the bus was moving fast towards Delhi. Light humor was still continuing in the bus. Finally after mid night we crossed in to Delhi and each one was carrying the sweet and pleasant memories of the trip. It was really a fantastic and pleasure some journey / tour, whose memories will be there for quite a long time.

How to improve your sense of humor

Posted on 3rd November 2009 by anurag in AAIPS Articles

Hi, This is Anurag!

Having a sense of humor is a very admirable trait. The opposite sex is attracted to a good sense of humor. Like anything, some people are born naturally gifted at telling good jokes, while others struggle to find the right punchline. If you find comedy difficult, understanding what makes a good joke will vastly improve your sense of humor and allow you to be the star of a dinner or party. Remember that a sense of humor is learned as well as inherited. You can sharpen your sense of humor if you really want to. When you do, people find you more attractive and fun to be with.

Here are Twenty two ways to improve your sense of humor:

1. Arouse curiosity. Never speak the punch line of the humorous story/joke in the beginning. Your audience should not have any inkling about the end of your joke otherwise the laughter would be missing and your joke may boomerang.

2. Never announce that you are going to tell them a joke. If you do they will listen to you on the first time but soon they may get bored and would avoid meeting you in future. If you want to become famous, first make the ground for the joke and then blur it out to make it look spontaneous. you have to do this cleverly. If you do it, they would look for you, call you, invite you in their parties and seminars.

3. The punch line should always be in the last of all the sentences of your story/ joke. If you speak anything after the punch line that would only spoil the effect of that joke. And there is no exception to this rule.

4. You may fumble while narrating the joke many times but you cant fumble on the punch line. It must role out smoothly from your lips. That’s why I would suggest you to always mug up the punch line and practice it speaking. But never memorize the story word to word.

5. Take special care of the ‘Punch word’; What is a punch word? Punch word is that word on which people laugh out loudly in the last. Punch word is mostly the last word of the punch line. You should not speak even a single word after the punch word. For example: A father was giving a piece of advice to his son on the eve of his wedding. Father: Son, there is only one way to handle these women… And what that way is…Nobody knows…( In this example the punch line is “and what that way is nobody knows”… Punch word is “knows”)

6. ‘The Three Pauses Technique’(TPT): Never speak a joke in one breath. You know your joke well but most people take time to understand. Give them time. Give the first pause before the punch line. So they understand that you have reached to the climax. Second pause before the punch word and third pause after the punch word and then shut up.( The dots on three places in the previous point represent pauses)

7. The body language, voice modulation, facial expression and eye contact: You may use all of them during the joke. But keep the punch line as simple as possible using none of the above. Don’t you agree? Try using them in your joke with someone, you will know the fact yourself.

8. Begin to focus on the funny things and enjoy the laughter they evoke. Look for incongruous situations. Incongruity is the soul of good humor. A skinny guy with big woman; a bearded man wearing a uniform; A doctor in suit wearing sport shoes; A fat man on a small scooter; anything mismatched that makes you smile.

9. Live in present. People who think about yesterdays and fearful tomorrows never improve their sense of humor.

10. The most important thing in a sense of humour is being able to look at the funny side of even the most annoying things. Look for the humorous side to events, especially stressful ones, before they get you down. Lighten up.
…A flat tire may be annoying, but you have to laugh at the gizmo they give you to jack your car up these days, don’t you?
This way Soon you will be seeing humor all over and enjoying it fully.

11. Start associating with humorous, fun loving people and avoid the tongue-tights. With quiet people you remain quiet and funny company makes you just like them. Society moulds a man.

12. It is important to realize that we all make mistakes and when we have a good laugh, that makes the mistake seem trivial. People like you when you laugh out your mistakes.

13. Never speak good about yourself. People don’t like you when you play your own trumpet. Rather, others like you when you play yourself down. So why not make fun of yourself.

14. When people try to laugh at your expense join them and laugh at yourself. They will instantly stop making fun of you. How can others continue laughing at you when you, instead of sulking, do the same on yourself? One of our course participant, Uma Wadhwani, a little overweight, went to a gurdwara with her friends sometime back. One of her friends said jokingly to her, “Uma, don’t step into the holy pond, the whole water will come out of it. Uma, instead of grumbling, joined them in her leg-pulling, “If it comes out, you put the water back into the pond. Her other friends laughed at her quick wit.

15. Make note of the jokes that really make people laugh and save them for opportune moments. I recall reading the ‘Situation Vacant” ads one morning and discovered this gem : ” The successful applicant should have 203 years experience.” Obviously the advertisement meant to say 2 or 3 years experience.
I immediately cut it out and placed it in my collection for future use.

16. Exaggerate the embarrassing moments of your life and tell others as a humorous story.

17. Encourage others to share their humor. Listen and appreciate it when they do. When someone sees that you have enjoyed their humorous contribution they will be eager to continue sharing and you may get their stories to use in future with your other friends.

18. Concentrate on the talks of your friends. Some are in the habit of repeating words, some are into self praise, some have pet-peeves. Make humor out of it but don’t make a mockery of them.

19. When you face a situation, ask yourself, how could I see this as funny? Or What’s funny about this? If you don’t get an answer, try to imagine What your favorite comedians might do in this situation? How would they describe it to an audience in a way that gets a laugh. You will get your answer.

20. Find your style. Watch all the great comedians on TV, radio or on big screen. To name a few: Raju Srivastav, Shekher Suman, Surender Sharma, Anupam Kher, Jaspal Bhatti, Johny Lever etc. They all have their own unique style and brand of comedy– slapstick, situational, political, cynical, raunchy, etc. Discover whatever works best for you and make your identity.

21. Find the content. Do you enjoy stressing details in a long story or do you prefer quick one-liners? Do you enjoy making fun of yourself or events you have witnessed? Do you like talking about passions or pet peeves? Do you like sharing stories about friends or the opposite sex? Your short or tall height, thinness or thickness and other personal situations are perfect for comedy. Choose content that makes others laugh.

22. The more you read, the more you imbibe the essence of humour. And not only reading humorous pieces – whatever you read, it makes you wiser, it enriches you, makes you think, and it all contributes to your sense of humour. But of course, you must keep your mind sharp too.

Some DO’s & DON’TS:

1. Once you have selected, prepared and practiced your jokes, find an audience. Ask yourself, what type of audience do you enjoy presenting your jokes to? Kids, adults or your peer group?

2. In my full day humor workshops I always ask the participants to break up into groups and begin sharing the funniest thing that has ever happened to them. This simple activity generates laughter in many silent people and then once they start they keep on cutting one joke or another on themselves. This way they come out and shed their inhibitions in a very short span of time. Try this with your friends sometime.

3. Never take others’ jokes seriously but don’t even hurt someone by just cracking a joke on them .

4. Make sure to avoid racist, sexist, or filthy humor. There is plenty of good, clean and naughty humor to go around without resorting to these. Remember that there is a difference between dirty and naughty humor. I personally like naughty humor. I don’t appreciate dirty material.
